ABOUT KAREN BUTTERWORTH


KAREN BUTTERWORTH studied at the Alexander Mackie College of Art, University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia.

Soon after graduating, she for some years lectured at the Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design, Auckland. Following that she was a lecturer in the School of Art and Design at AUT University, Auckland from 1995 to 2001, in 1995 winning a national art award.

Since 2002 she has focussed on painting and drawing. She has held eight solo exhibitions in Auckland and taken part in numerous group shows. Her work is held at AUT University, Auckland , as well as in private collections in New Zealand, Australia and the UK. She has been a finalist in the Adam Award for Portraiture in Wellington four times as well as a finalist in the annual Wallace Art Awards.

Karen’s inspiration comes from her experience of the varied landscapes, seascapes and flora of this country, as well as the landforms and geological layering and diversity here. Influencing her work are her philosophical observations of a society unique to New Zealand.
